HONORS PROGRAM IN LINGUISTICS
Doing honors work brings great personal and intellectual rewards, including mastery of a topic, and getting to know two faculty members quite well. However, students should be aware that is requires a significant amount of time commitment throughout all three quarters of the senior year (in recognition of this, 10 units of directed reading and honors research can be devoted to writing the thesis).
Students who have maintained a grade point average (GPA) of 'B+' or better in the courses required for the major and who wish to undertake a more intensive program of study including independent research should seek departmental honors. Evidence of in depth research work is often required for admission to advanced degrees, whether professional (e.g. Law) or academic (e.g. Linguistics, Anthropology, Education).
Many students start thinking about topics for their honors thesis in the Winter of their junior year. The Undergraduate Research Program offers student research grants. Please review their website for information about applying for funding and about how to complete Human Subject Protocols if you are doing field work. Linguistics 197, Undergraduate Research Seminar, provides the opportunity to further develop the project.
