********************************************************************* The Semantics of the Middle Voice Edit Doron, HUJI & UCSC doron@ling.ucsc.edu Monday, October 19, 7 PM Linguistics Common Room (Stevenson 249) UCSC ********************************************************************* Abstract: The Middle Voice gives rise to intransitive verbs, some of which are unergative (wash) while others are unaccusative (break). What they have in common, according to Chierchia 1989, is reflexivity, and what distinguishes them, according to Reinhart 1996 and Simmons 1996, is agentivity. The Semitic morphological system reveals the different entailments associated with causers and agents, and, in particular, the association of the middle voice with the reflexivization of agentives. ********************************************************************* - ********************************************************** To subscribe to semantics-group, send the command: - subscribe semantics-group in the body of a message to "Majordomo@csli.stanford.edu". - To unsubscribe to semantics-group, send the command: - unsubscribe semantics-group in the body of a message to "Majordomo@csli.stanford.edu". **********************************************************
