Mentor TA job description
The appointment is for a 50% Mentor TAship for one quarter, with the
workload spread over three quarters. Most of the work is in the Fall Quarter.
During the Fall, here's what you'll be responsible for:
- introduce all new TAs - as well as the old ones - to the TA Handbook
and its contents.
- attend the CTL orientation for TAs, with the new Linguistics TAs for
the year
- coordinate the TA Training class
- ensure that students and faculty are aware of the TA guidelines
- serve as liaison with CTL
- serve as resource to TAs during the year
-
make recommendations to the Linguistics Department
Committee on Graduate Studies regarding TA responsibilities and training,
etc.
At the end of the school year, here's what you'll do:
-
meet with next year's Mentor TA to discuss the position
-
meet with GSA to assign TAs for following year
-
plan calendar for the Fall TA Training Class.
The TA training class is your biggest logistical responsibility.
But the big picture of your job is to support grad students as they develop
their knowledge about and skills for teaching. This development doesn't
stop after Fall quarter, and there are many other things you can do during
the year to make sure it continues. You can organize lectures, discussions
or workshops, either through CTL or within the department. You've gotten
the position because you have teaching experience in the department, with
excellent evaluations from your former students. Of course, those evaluations
themselves mean that you take teaching as a job seriously, and the new
TAs will appreciate that!
