Writing in the Major (WIM) CA job description
Advanced doctoral students in Linguistics who expect to be in residence
for the Winter Quarter are invited to apply for the Course Assistant
(CA) position described below, which is associated with Linguistics 150,
Language and Society, introduction to sociolinguistics, which is also
the department's writing in the major (WIM) course. A WIM course is one
that majors use to fulfill a University writing requirement. In this
course, majors do several writing assignments and receive feedback
throughout the writing process. We expect 4-7 students to use the
course to fulfill this requirement.
Responsibilities during AY 2008-09:
- providing written feedback to students who are using this course to
satisfy the WIM requirement both on the intermediate drafts and
the final versions of major writing assignments
- backing up the written feedback with oral feedback, provided in
one-on-one meetings with students
- coordinating with the instructor about expectations for student
written work and about the division of grading responsibilities,
which may be adjusted depending on the size of the course and the
availability of a regular course TA
- holding several tutorial sessions on aspects of the writing process
- holding an office hour each week
- maintaining the Department's WIM web site

(When the enrollment of Linguistics 150 merits, this course also is
assigned a regular TA, who deals primarily with the non-writing related
facets of the course.)
Time commitment:
This position represents a commitment of roughly 6-8 hours per week
over the course of the quarter. The workload may vary from week to
week, and the total number of hours will fluctuate somewhat from year
to year depending on the students registered.
Qualifications:
- Strong writing skills
- Previous TA experience in Linguistics
- Ability to work effectively one-on-one with undergraduates
Pay:
- An additional stipend is available as payment for the CA duties.
