Stratal OT or Sympathy?

Paul Kiparsky, Department of Linguistics, Stanford University

I present Stratal OT's solution to the problem of phonological opacity, illustrate it with an analysis of Yowlumne Yokuts phonology, and argue that Stratal OT is superior to parallel OT with Sympathy.

I first formulate seven arguments to show that Stratal OT sharpens OT's factorial typology whereas sympathy subverts it. I then demonstrate that it accounts for four well-attested types of opaque constraint interaction which are beyond the reach of current nonstratal versions of OT.
