COMMITTEES
UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES COMMITTEE
Shapes policy for undergraduate curriculum and the major and minor in
Linguistics, and monitors the success of these programs. Faculty
members of this committee arbitrate undergraduate problems and act on
individual petitions.
GRADUATE STUDIES COMMITTEE
Oversees the structure of the graduate curriculum, implementing
academic goals agreed on by the department; coordinates with the
graduate representatives to organize graduate professional activities.
GRADUATE ADMISSIONS COMMITTEE
Ranks applications to the department's graduate program, makes
recommendations about acceptances and about general admissions policy,
and counsels prospective incoming graduate students.
COLLOQUIUM COMMITTEE
Schedules regular colloquium talks and works to develop funding
possibilities for the colloquium budget.
OUTREACH COMMITTEE
Plans and oversees effective use of the WWW and other means for
communication by the department to potential undergraduate majors and
minors, graduate applicants, linguists at other institutions, and the
public.
SOCIAL COMMITTEE
Prepares refreshments for departmental colloquia and/or weekly Friday
social hours.
PHONETICS LAB COMMITTEE
Sets general lab policies and goals, and explores ways to finance lab
acquisitions and activities.
COMPUTING/INTERNET COMMITTEE
Gauges the department's current and future computing needs, develops
ways of meeting these needs (maintenance strategy and equipment
proposals). Allocates computing facilities within the department.
Oversees the department's Web and ftp site.
LIBRARY COMMITTEE
Makes recommendations for departmental library operation and
acquisition and serves as liaison between the department and the
university library system. Special charge: Confer with department on
the setting up of a catalogue and check-out system.
SPACE
Assigns offices and plans for any further renovation of Margaret Jacks
Hall.
COURSE & CURRICULUM COMMITTEE
Works with the area faculties to coordinate course offerings, staffing
and scheduling.
